Bachelor of Computer Applications

Bachelor of Computer Applications at HICL

The Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) is a three-year UK undergraduate degree in applied computing — software, databases, web development, networks and systems. It's deliberately practical rather than research-focused: graduates of a BCA are job-ready for software development, IT support, web development, database administration and entry-level systems roles.

The BCA is particularly recognised in South Asian, Gulf and African markets as the standard undergraduate computing qualification — different from a BSc Computer Science, which is more theoretical. If your career is heading into applied IT work rather than computer science research, the BCA is often the more directly useful credential.

BCA vs BSc Computer Science

BSc Computer Science leans toward theory: algorithms, formal methods, computation theory, occasionally heavy maths. BCA leans toward application: building working software, managing databases, configuring networks, deploying systems. For most graduate jobs in software development and IT, both work — but BCA is more directly aligned to the day-to-day work.

Who This Is For

  • School leavers committed to a career in computing and IT.
  • Self-taught developers wanting a formal degree.
  • Career changers entering IT from non-technical backgrounds.
  • International students seeking a UK-recognised computing degree.

Career Pathways

Junior Developer (web, mobile, application), Junior Systems Administrator, Database Administrator (entry-level), IT Support Engineer, Junior DevOps Engineer, Junior Network Engineer. From there, specialisation happens through work experience and additional certifications (cloud, security, specific stacks).

How the Programme Is Delivered

Computing is taught well online — students can practise as they learn. The BCA is offered fully online, on-campus in London, and via distance learning. Module structure confirmed at enrolment.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of secondary school to A-level standard (or international equivalent), preferably with mathematics.
  • Minimum age 17.
  • IELTS 5.5–6.0 or equivalent for non-native English speakers.
